🎶What's this person reading right now🎶
If you didn't read that in the TikTok video voice, then I'm sorry. I'm a big nerd sometimes.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out this video.
I read a lot. I always have. It's such a great escape from the world, my exhausting and hectic life, and disappear into a new world. Oftentimes, the worlds I disappear into are magical realms, but that's not a requirement for me.
I really only require a few things from the books I choose to spend time with:
-
They must be fictional stories. I don't get into non-fiction. I've tried, it just doesn't work for me.
-
They must have relatable characters. People I can understand, even if I don't agree with their actions.
-
They must have at least one snarky side-kick type character.
I'm currently reading:
A HIGHLANDER FOR HANNAH
by Mary Warren
I'm reading this as an ARC. It will be published on Sept 20th
I'm enjoying the story, but I do have some concerns. I'm hoping that the copy I have is an unedited ARC because it definitely needs some professional edits. The author switches tense in the middle of sentences, is inconsistent with Graham's accent, and tends to be a bit repetitive. The story basically reads like Outlander FanFic, in which the sexy Scot comes forward in time and falls for a plus-sized blonde. It's a fun story, I just think it needs some time with an editor.
I just finished:
FROM BLOOD AND ASH by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own.
This book has been all over the damn place and I finally bit the bullet and tried it out. I had a lot of mixed feelings in the beginning. I started to worry that it wasn't worth the hype, but I stuck it out and I'm so glad I did! I'm in line to get the sequel from the library, but you bet your ass I'm eagerly awaiting my turn! I need to know what happens next.
Earlier this year:
KINGDOM OF SIRENS AND MONSTERS
by Tara Quinn
"Mirror, mirror, in the shell that thy lay,
Who is the fairest in Odyssey Bay?"
I picked this one up because I love sea tales and wanted to support a fellow indie. I struggled to finish this book if I'm being entirely truthful. The story was great, but the storytelling left things to be desired. I think it could have benefitted from a more thorough edit. The story had such promise, and some of my "issues" weren't big deals, they just made the story feel too rough. It wasn't as polished as it could have been.
